This and That on Monday

Spiders

I know, I know, I talk constantly about my phobias. My most extreme fear is of spiders a.k.a arachnophobia. Yesterday, Gail At the Farm, profiled an Arkansas Tarantula. If you know ANYTHING about me you know that even looking at photos brings it back.  So blame her, not me.

I became fearful at the age of three when I awoke from a nightmare and on my bed were hundreds of spiders... except, they weren’t spiders, but quilt tacking. My mom "killed" them (thanks, Mom), I went back to sleep just to be found sleeping behind the chair the next morning.

My spider fear has stayed with me through the years.

Fast forward in your time machine to 2003, please. It was 2 a.m. Sunday morn when I awoke with a bed mate, a brown recluse spider. Actually, after I captured that one (he bit me behind my knee), I found its mate hiding under one of the six bed pillows on my bed.

It’s a complicated story that involves steroids, sleeping with the lights on in my bedroom for one year, and a population under my house that decided to find its way into my house. But, enough of that....

Woman’s Day online magazine posted 10 Fascinating Phobias.  Here are a few of my favorites:

Arachibutyrophobia—Fear of Peanut Butter Sticking to the Roof of One’s Mouth (I would say to these people--not to worry. Peanut Butter stuck to the roof of the mouth is an opportunity for a snack later.)

Mnemophobia—Fear of Memories (I am so glad that I don’t have to worry about this one. No memory here to fear.)

Optophobia—Fear of Opening One’s Eyes (I only have this phobia when faced with looking at myself in the mirror.)

Lastly (and we all knew this would happen one day): Nomophobia—Fear of Losing Cell Phone Contact (I can name at least five hundred people that would have a breakdown if they lost their CP contact).

I’m changing jobs.

There I said it. I don’t think there is any turning back now, since we will be interviewing for my IT position in the next week. I interviewed a few weeks ago for a new position and they gave me the position. I guess I didn’t think they would. I hope it’s the right decision to take a position I’ve only had general training for (a few years ago) but have no experience with, but when did that ever stop me? Oh…and no one to show me the ropes.

More later….

Lost

I know you want to know this...I lost a tooth filling Sunday while driving to my daughter’s house after church. Gum…chomp…dislodged entire filling. It's now a crater. But tell me this, how in the world can I make my tongue stop playing tag with the tooth? It’s driving me crazy.

That's my rambling for this Monday. Let's hear from you.

Must admit I have serious nomophobia since I got my new smart phone! Good luck on the new job!

I do not care for spiders, but unless they are huge and hairy I just kill them and go about my way. My son flips out if he sees one, any size, anywhere. I get to be the brave one when I'm around him during these times (ha).
Congrats on the new job! I'm praying for you, and hope for many blessings to come your way on it. I still am looking for work after 1 year and 5 months. God watches over us, but if I had a phobia it would have to be about not having a job. Not sure what the name for that would be though. Maybe, "Unemployaphobia" maybe?
I've lost a tooth before and done that and it does drive you crazy! I didn't quit until I got it fixed, just being honest!

Have a blessed day!

Here is my public apology...I am so sorry!

I was truly fascinated and did not mean to resurrect phobias in my friends...well, maybe just a tad, I am a little ornery.

I am given pictures by my sister and go with what I have, again, sorry.

On the funny side, I am baring my phobias on a post later this week and inviting all to share theirs.

Now, you will have ammunition to execute a wonderful pay back, you will know my weaknesses.

Good luck with your new position, I am sure you will shine in this new job as you shine in all you do!

I can totally understand your fear of spiders, mine's rats (any and all sizes).

You mentioned nomophobia. On the news over the weekend I hear where a college or school (can't remember) didn't allow cellphones or social networking (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Seems it was devastating to most of them. To me, that would be a nice break. Oh, the younger generation.

Good luck with your new position. You'll do great.

Oooh...I think a brown recluse in bed with you would make anyone phobic! I was bitten by one in college and it was horrible--that rainbow with the poison fanning out. Ugh.

Good luck with the new job! Sounds like a new adventure to go on. :)
Good luck with your interview. And after your experience with spiders, I probably wouldn't like them either.

Very exciting times over here, good luck with the new job! Change is good sometimes, keeps us on our toes. This and that with me involves juggling writing and stripping wallpaper this week, good times.
Oh, how exciting! I wish you the best with this new position. Can't wait to hear more.

And I'm with you on the arachniphobia. Ack and eek! I embarrass myself, but can't shake the fear.

Arachnophobic here, too. I think one must have jumped on me when I was little. Not that I remember it, but it's the only thing that explains why I won't even get close to one if I see it.

You'll do fine on your new job. Have faith. And call the dentist. Now.

Your title caught my eye as I hate spiders as well. Snakes too but that's another matter.
I put off bug bombs occasionally to try to keep them out of the house. Yet I saw one two days ago and he looked quite healthy. I killed him, of course. Swatting them takes great courage and I hate the job. Usually I call my husband.
I met a tarantula eye to eye one day on a screen door in W Texas. It took forever to get over the experience and the people owning the house would not kill the thing. It seems to them they are harmless and eat bad bugs. Whatever that is.

Blessings and may spiders go back to where they came from.

I don't like to be in enclosed rooms with no windows. I feel like I want to run through the wall to get out.

Oh, a brown recluse. Nasty little things. I understand from first hand knowledge. :(

Good luck on your new job, wish I could apply for your old one. :)

*shivers on spiders* Hubby had a brown recluse bite in the same spot you did just before we left Portland--1999 probably. It STILL seeps occasionally, 11 years later and he has a big hole where the tissue just died. Ick.

Love some of those other phobias and I laughed out loud with the memory one--that is me too.

Big congrats on your new position. I don't think it's ever a bad thing to step out of what's comfortable into something new.

If I'd been bitten by a brown recluse, I'd be arachnophobic, too. Yikes!
Hi Theresa .. I'm not that keen on snakes .. can have momentary phobias ... to make fun of myself or someone else .. otherwise I get on with it ..

but new job .. well another story .. I hope all goes well with the interviews .. are you staying in your organisation .. sounds a little like it ..

The toothly hole will not be tongue relieved until it has some stuff put in it .. usually white or gold now-a-days .. the old silver stuff they don't like no more ..

Good luck with the filling refill!!

Cheers Hilary

Those are some funny phobias that you list. My wife is like you when it comes to snakes. If we watch a movie that shows a snake she hides her eyes and I have to let her know when the snake is gone. I don't think we'll be watching Snakes on a Plane together any time soon.

At least you have a reason for your phobia. I’m terrified of spiders and have no idea why. Recluses can be dangerous - I hope you didn’t get sick from the bite.

Good luck with your new job.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to keep your tongue away from the spot until a few weeks after your dentist visit!)

Oooh, the spider stories just creep me out...I'm totally paranoid now!

Good luck with your new job! How exciting! I'm sure you prayed about it and this is where God is leading you. You will be fine...He will bring things together for your good :-)

Oh, it's horrible to lose a filling. Your tongue won't stop. Sorry that you'll have to visit the dentist. Sorry about the recent spider retraumatization. I think phobia lists are really interesting. When I was teaching seventh grade English, we had a poster of lists of phobias and wrote stories about them. I wish I still had the poster. Good luck in the new job!! I'm off into the wild, blue yonder!!
