Top Ten Movie Countdown Blogfest

Alex Cavanaugh’s Top Ten Movie Countdown Blogfest is today.  Be sure to visit him. This has been a difficult task for me because I like movies in general even though I'm not easy to impress. It's just that I have many favorites.
Here’s my top ten, in reverse.
10.  Star Wars- 1977 and all sequels (mostly) (Fantasy, Sci Fi) – This is the traditional evil vs. good plot.  Favorite characters are Hans Solo, Princess Leia and Yoda. (Crushed on Hans Solo.)

9.   Premonition –2007 (Drama, Mystery) A woman learns her husband was killed in a car       accident the day before, but the next day wakes up and finds he’s alive. Her days go back and       forth – he’s dead, he’s alive. She decides to keep track of each day thinking she might be able to save him. Twist at the end. (Kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing.)

8.      Hope Floats – 1998 (Drama, Romance) A woman’s husband (on TV show) confesses he’s loves someone else. Birdee (the character) moves her daughter back to live with her mom in her hometown. Birdee is severely depressed and has to heal and tries to help her daughter heal. (Don’t watch this if you’re depressed, but it is a great movie. Just got it for my birthday!)

7.      Enough –2002 (Drama, Thriller) An abused woman takes her young daughter and runs from her husband the abuser. She knows she must keep them safe and trains to defend herself.  Her husband tries to find her but…he shouldn’t have, if you know what I mean. (You feel like you’re right there with her and helping her do what she needs to do.)

6.      Sleeping with the Enemy 1991 (Thriller) Another abused woman must get away from the abuser. She fakes her death and starts a new life, but she is found. (What’s up with me and domestic abuse movies? This movie kept me on guard.)

5.   Star Trek (2009) (Action, Fantasy, Sci fi) – This movie takes us back to the beginning to see how the young and out of control James Kirk gets started with the Federation. He and the young Mr. Spock clash, but in the end their loyalty to the Federation helps them work together to triumph over the enemy.  (LOVE this movie)

4.   Two Weeks Notice – 2002 (Comedy, Romance) A nonprofit lawyer goes to work for the man, but the (ditsy) wealthy man treats her like his 24/7 servant. She leaves, but it’s too late. They’ve fallen in love. (Sandra Bullock is a funny actress.  I saw this twice in the theaters with two separate people. Prepare to laugh.)

3.   The Holiday – 2006 (Comedy, Romance) Two women suffering from broken hearts trade houses for the holiday season. One is in England and the other is in California.  They’ve decided true love will never be theirs. Or will it? (A feel good movie!)

2.   Hide and Seek – 2005 (Psychological Thriller) After his wife commits suicide, a widower moves with his young daughter to a remote area and uses his field of psychology to try and help her with her imaginary friend. Nothing is what it seems to be. (Warning: there is a dead cat scene – just remember it’s not real. This movie is one of my favorites. Talk about tense and confusing.)

1.       Da Ta Da Daaaaaaaa My number one love of movies is a Nancy Meyers’ film
Something’s Gotta Give  2003 (Comedy, Romance).  Two older single people treat their quest for love differently. They get together and then break up. The experience of a broken heart gives the female character, a playwright, material for a play. (This is my favorite movie. I watch it often. I love that the main female character is a writer and knows who she is. I love the house too. The cast of characters is phenomenal. (A warning: There is brief nudity and some expletives.)

YOU DIDN’T THINK I’D STOP THERE DID YOU? If you’re not ready to move on here’s my list of old movies, too. I suggest you rent each one. They are great movies. In reverse are:

10. The Egg and I – 1947 B/W (Comedy, Romance) A newlywed couple buy a rundown chicken farm.  All kinds of things go wrong including their marriage. (Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray)
9. Max Dugan Returns – 1983 (Neil Simon Comedy/Drama) A down on her luck English teacher and single mother’s life is interupts when her criminal father comes back into her life. (Marsha Mason, Jason Robards, Donald Sutherland, Matthew Broderick)
8. Murphy’s Romance – 1985 (Drama, Romance) A divorced single mom moves to a small town and starts a horse ranch. She falls for an older man and then her worthless ex-husband comes back in the picture.  (Sally Fields, James Garner, Corey Haim)
7. The Omega Man – 1971 (Sci Fi Thriller) An scientist doctor who has been working on a cure for a plague that is wiping out the human race finds himself alone on Earth except for a group of killer nocturnal mutants.  (Charlton Heston)
6. Soylent Green - 1973 (Futuristic, mystery, drama) The Earth is over populated. A NY police detective gets too close to the truth of the source for their food rations and is marked for murder by the government.  (Another awesome Charlton Heston movie. Also, starring in the movie is Edward G. Robinson and Leigh Taylor Young)
5. The Odd Couple – 1968 (Comedy) Two friends who have opposite life styles and characters share an apartment.  Neat versus slob. (Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau)
4. Yours Mine and Ours - 1968 (Comedy, Drama) A widower and widow find each other on a Navy base. They give into getting married and combining his ten children and her eight as a family. All kinds of problems arise. (Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda)
3. Please don’t eat the daisies – 1960 (Comedy) A new drama critic and his wife try to raise four sons in a small apartment. They have to find another place to live and move to a rundown house in the country where the husband must now commute to and from NY for his job. Problems arise that involve ego and another woman.   (Doris Day and David Niven)
2. The Apartment – 1960 (Comedy, Romance) A man lets executives use his apartment for affairs and in turn they promise he will move up in the company. But, he falls in love with one of the women and jeopardizes everything. (Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, Fred MacMurray)
1. Miracle on 34th Street – 1947 (Drama, Family) A woman in charge of Santa and the Macy’s Parade doesn’t believe in anything fantasy and is raising her daughter that way. Then a man claiming to be Santa challenges her belief system. She falls in love with the attorney proving Santa’s identity. (Maureen O’Hara, Edmond Gwenn, John Payne, Natalie Wood)
There you have it, my choice of top twenty ten movies. You should have seen my first list.
Do you have a favorite movie? Or twenty?

Interesting choices. :) To be honest, I didn't expect to see Hide'n'Seek in your list, but on the other hand, I'm happy to see The Holiday. It was hilarious!
Sleeping With the Enemy (some of it) was filmed at my college campus while I was a student there (although it was filmed over the break, so I *wasn't* there.) All the college scenes where she meets Mr. Right. :)

Love the old movies! Especially Yours, Mine, and Ours and Please Don't Eat the Daisies. And I love Miracle on 34th Street. :)

Very interesting lists, I forgot about Enough, that was a really good one.
You cheated!
They can make Star Trek films forever as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks for participating in my blogfest!

Awesome picks you have there! I remember The Omega Man being cool and scary (when I was younger, of course) and the same goes for Soylent Green (which also starred the late, great, Edward G. Robinson)

I've not seen all of these, but many I've enjoyed. I crushed on Han Solo, too. :)

Happy Birthday!! Hope you have fun today! Have you been to the antique mall I mentioned before? Let me know how you like it.

Well done! I actually haven't seen quite a few of these - I can't deal with movies that break my heart (I'm such a wimp!) I'd forgotten about the Holiday - that was a fun one :)

Okay, you actually have a few movies mentioned that I haven't seen and some that I've seen but don't really remember, which would explain why I don't have them on my list, but it makes me want to watch them again.

Miracle on 34th Street every Christmas season - been watching it annually since I was a little girl. :)

You're good. I love Yours, Mine and Ours. My favorite Lucille Ball movie is the Long, Long Trailer. She and Desi are newlyweds who travel across the country with a 40 ft. camper. It's awesome.

I love that part in Two Weeks Notice when she calls him the most selfish person on the planet and he says "that's silly. Have you met everyone on the planet?

Something's Got to Give. YES! How did I forget to include that on my own list?

You picked some great ones. I love Murphy's Romance.
I remember being really horrified by Soylent Green when I first saw it.
OMG! Yours, Mine & Ours! Please Don't Eat the Daisies! LOVE!

Um THE HOLIDAY is one of my favorites and almost made it on today's list.... just not enough to make 10.

I think I would've like Premonition a lot better if it hadn't been for the ending. Maybe it's just me being a little too literal minded, but I can't help thinking what ended up coming out of everything would've made things more difficult for Sandra Bullock's character.

I love two weeks notice, I agree - prepare to laugh. The Holiday was also on my list.

Great lists! Sandra Bullock is one of my favorite actresses, but I don't automatically like all her movies. I did love Sleeping with the Enemy, though.

Premonition sounds really good. I don't even remember that one. I'm adding it to my list.

Great list! Some of my faves are on there, too. I was just thinking about rewatching "Something's gotta give." You can't beat a movie about a strong female playwright played by Diane Keaton!

I thought Premonition was a great movie but I don't know that I'd ever want to watch it again. I found it quite depressing! I do love Sandra Bullock a lot though :)

Nice list!
