Sunday Reflection: RAK

Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) week is February 9-15. By nature, I am a kind person, that is, if I don’t have to go out of my way. That doesn’t do much for humankind, however, if kindness is only convenient.

One day last week, I made (bland) meals for three teachers who have cancer. When one emailed and thanked me for my kindness, I nearly fell out of my chair. I didn't think providing meals as being kind, just providing a service.

I've said this before, kindness takes all forms: smiles, reaching for something on a higher shelf in the grocery store for someone, not judging another as they stand alongside the road asking for money and then giving them $5. If nothing else, Random Acts of Kindness week helps me reflect on what I do and don’t do for others and how my every day life can bring a flicker of hope to someone.

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” Matthew 25:31-40 (NIV)

Today is the last day for Random Acts of Kindness—or is it?
Blessings,
Teresa

You never know how a seemingly simple act of kindness will profoundly effect a person. I found an ornament in one of my boxes...it was free with the It's a Wonderful Life DVD I bought years ago. Says, 'every time a bell rings an angel gets its wings'. One of my friends loves that movie and always says she is blessed like George Bailey. I put it in my purse and when I saw her at a craft show, I asked if she'd like to have it. Her reaction floored me. She started to shake and weep with appreciation. Hugged me over and over, showed our mutual friends who also went to the show, posted it on Facebook...(much to my embarrassment...I don't do things for recognition).
Every day should include a random act of kindness. While a smile or holding a door for someone should be just common courtesy, it's a start and a nice thing to do for someone.

Funny, been praying a lot lately about thinking about what and How I do things. And if I'm really thinking of others. Good post!
As Alex says: each day has room in it for a random act of kindness. I wrote a Christian flash fantasy highlighting your quote from Jesus occurring in post-Katrina New Orleans: "God Can't Breathe: - http://rolandyeomans.blogspot.com/2014/12/god-cant-breathe.html

I remember you liking it, telling me of you and Millie. :-)
A random act of kindness can change a day, or even a life...
