CHARLOTTE’S WEB, by E.B. White


I read Charlotte's Web in fourth grade after my life (seemingly) ended. I had just finished the last book of the Little House series and wondered what would I do now. Go back to playing outside with my friends? Do my homework? I had a better idea. I walked to our classroom library bookshelves and pulled out the copy of Charlotte's Web. 


Even though I had (yes still have) a terrible, ridiculous phobia of spiders, I pushed that aside and enjoyed reading this book. I continue to hold Charlotte's Web dear to my heart.


First Line: “Where’s Papa going with that ax?” said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.


End Line: "It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. Charlotte was both."


My favorite quote from this book is actually right before the last line: “…none of the new spiders ever quite took her place in his heart. She was in a class by herself.”


Even though I’ve been told all my adult life that people can be replaced, I’d like to think—um no, not really.

Charlotte sounds a great character .. and I love the last phrase "Charlotte was Both" ... cheers Hilary

People nor special spiders can be replaced. I wish it were different but we keep them in our heart always.

I read the book and saw the movie in 3rd grade...1973. Loved both. But I still don't like spiders.
I love, love, love this book. I remember the first time I read it. After reading it, I became a vegetarian for a long time! I was 6. :)

People can never be replaced.

Charlotte is a special kind of spider.
No, people can never be replaced. Function can be replaced but never personality -- and souls are precious just because they are unique. :-)
Hate, hate, hate the spiders but I do admit I love the Charlotte. I too read it in the forth grade.

Saw your post Miss T and wanted to see if you survived the wicked storms last night. Gotta tell ya, this chick felt her toes touch the yellow brick road a couple times. Farm Boy, well he's gonna wake up in a tree one of these days!

You had to bring up the tearjerker of my childhood. Still, this is one of those emotional stories that I enjoy revisiting. :)

We are never too old to read a story book! And I have personally felt, a bit of tales do help us come out of our endless mature fears :)

When I was in 4th grade our teacher read Charlotte's Web to us over a period of several days. I remember crying when she reached the end of book. She read aloud so beautifully and I was so moved.
