THE NIX OF MILL POND

N is for:

THE NIX OF MILL POND by no one important

This is my favorite short story-child from Grim Tales (until tomorrow when I write about Odds and Ends). I changed the ending of THE NIX OF MILL POND, to make it more suspenseful. I like this baby because it’s deep in rural flavor and reminds me of my brother and cousin (as children) IF they would have gone somewhere they shouldn’t have—and they probably did.

First Line: “The boys watched the early morning fog lift in etheral patterns, floating above the ground.”

Next to the last (End)Line: “George stopped too and faced his friend, wide eyed.”

In contrast to the last line of a novel, a short story last line COULD tell you the ending.  Therefore, you get the second to the last line.

Didn't all brothers (and sisters) go places they were warned against? A rite of childhood I think. And Nixies were I remember quite scary...
Hi Teresa .. I think I remember this story - and once the A-Z is over I must go back and re-read your Grim Tales ... now I want to see what you've come up with O ... the fog does lift in ethereal patterns doesn't it ... it rolls in off the sea here .. and swirls around .. cheers Hilary
Great lines! And interesting observation about short stories...so true that, unlike novels, the last lines can really have spoilers!

I used to love the Grimm Brothers as a kid. I'll have to check out some of their short stories again.

In other words, if you WANT kids to go somewhere, tell them not to. :)
I used this notion in UNDER A VOODOO MOON where Victor's mother kept telling him to do something, knowing he would do the very opposite!

I like stories where the twist comes in the last line and flips the whole thing on its head.
