Xtra, Xtra read all….

X is for: Xtra Reading:

Two additional books I’ve enjoyed reading.

THE REINCARNATION OF PETER PROUD by Max Ehrlich (Adult)

First Lines: He walked out of the cottage and into the night. He was stark naked.

No end line for you! It might spoil the goods.

And

DOLL BONES by Holly Black (middle grade)

First Line: Poppy set down one of the mermaid dolls close to the stretch of asphalt road that represented the Blackest Sea.

End Lines: Poppy smiled a familiar scheming smile, her eyes alight with new hope. “You want to play?” she asked.

The first lines of both books, I have studied, wondering about their clever pull.  They have my attention.

Comments

Hi Teresa ... I am like you mesmerised by the first one - the thought ... and then your comment:no end line ... better check out Peter Proud ..

Doll bones - interesting thought ... Poppy sounds a right little Miss ... cheers Hilary

I have to say that end line from Doll Bones is a bit chilling.

Hopefully the night wasn't too cold or things may not have been bold lol
I don't need to comment because Pat already did!

I have a lot of Xtra reading to do. Doll Bones sounds intriguing.

Reincarnation of Peter Proud--I think any line that makes you blink, pause, start asking questions is good. Hey, a naked man walking out his door would get my attention--a naked anyone would. :-)

I don't read MG books unless I'm reading to the grands--maybe a few times a year. Usually we're doing other things. But, I could see how I could use my voice in reading it for more effect.

Walking out of your house stark naked would get anyone's attention. I'm not sure about Poppy and her mermaid doll.

I enjoy an exciting thrilling epilogue.
DOLL BONES has such an evocative first line. :-)

The part about being naked added on to an innocuous line grabs the attention. I want to know more about the Blackest Sea.

They set the scene and give you a connection to a character right away.
