Really Hearing God-Really

The Lord said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.

After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" 1 Kings 19: 11-13 (NIV)

JW thoughts: I am easily distracted. My attention is never in one place for long. It's a problem. Because of my short attention span, I need to be mindful of my attentiveness to God. Am I seeking an authentic relationship with him? Am I hearing him? The relationship between God and his children is one where we often need to be silent and hear his whispers. It is difficult to hear God in a noisy world. We may need to slow down and be silent...to hear him.

Thanks for the reminder to slow down and listen, Teresa! This is a lesson I need repeatedly. :)

That's one of my favorite passages in scripture. I'm also easily distracted, especially by the noise of the world that wants to drown out God's voice. Thanks for this post.

My solitary walks in nature are when I feel closest to God.
In silence, we can hear voices that go back centuries.

I'm so guilty of not listening when I should be. Happy day!
I too am as spastic as a rat terrier after a bone but Gods word says, "be still and know that I am God." I'm so very guilty of not landing long enough to really stop hand hear. Great post sister!

Ya'll have a beautiful Sunday!!!

When I was reading this, I thought, God is not in the destruction. God is in the rebuilding. We hear the Holy Spirit in the birdsong, feel it in the wind.

Slow down? Be silent? The only time I do that is when I am asleep, but you are right. I know, I've read it too.

Take care & God bless.
