Sunday Reflection: The Truth of the Matter
I
saw a video once where a little boy was told by his mother not to eat the freshly
baked chocolate chip cookies until they had cooled. His mother left the room, and when she returned, she saw that her little boy had chocolate smeared on his face and mouth. She pointed
her video camera at him and asked him if had eaten any
of the cookies. The little boy vehemently denied doing so. Of course, the
evidence told a different story.
Being “real” isn’t an easy thing to do in our world. Often fake seems to be more desirable. But God desires, in our relationship with Him, that we be true and authentic.
“God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” John 4:24 (NIV)
God loves all of his people, but the truth of the matter is, God is drawn to the truth tellers over the lie bearers because it's in His nature to be true.
“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” Psalm 145:18
Although
I’m totally convinced there are people who cannot handle hearing the truth, there is a definite freedom associated with being truthful. Telling the truth may be painful, but holding onto a lie is a
huge burden.
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will
set you free.” John
