My First IWSG Post EVER!

I’m not gonna lie, I feel a bit giddy about my first time posting as an Insecure Writer. Excited, too. I’m not excited that I’m an insecure writer or that there has to be a group of supporting writers to help other writers with their insecurities, but dang it, we are a sensitive group, full of huge talent, and we bleed when you stab us.

So please don’t stab with knives or broken glass or use cruel words because that's that same thing.

What kept me from joining the group? I don’t know unless it’s been that I’m so insecure that I was too insecure to join an insecure writer group.

Maybe that.

Maybe I’m lazy? No, I'm not lazy.

Maybe because I have a problem with commitment? That's it! But commitment is good for us.

Here is a small sample of my insecure thoughts:

* I’m a writer. I know that I am a writer because writing for me is like breathing; I must do it. If I have a writing instrument, I write every day. But without something newly published or published at all, when you say to non-writers, I’m a writer, they nod and say, “That's nice" or "Good for you". Then they leave and never look you in the eye again. Well maybe not that last part or the first part. It's probably my insecurity talking.

* I have no formal training as a writer. I mean, you can tell this by reading my blog. Yes, English is my first language, but grammar and punctuation are foreign languages to me. Oh and get this, I work in a school. Trust me when I say, I am surrounded by grammar Nazis judging every little sentence. They can't help it.  They're good people, mostly.

* I can’t even count the ways I’ve grown as a writer since I began blogging and following other writers. I’ve read everything.single.thing.out.there. you all have posted about writing. Not every single thing, but nearly. This is NOT an insecurity, but thought I'd add it.

* I'm a fast reader, but I’m not a fast writer. When writing, I become Tommy Turtle.  I think this is because I’m never ever (one more) EVER happy with what I write, so I pick at it like a good school nurse on a lice infested head. This nitpicking slows me down.

So, WELCOME to the IWSG, ME!

Thank you, Alex, for starting this group and website, and his helpers, too. Also for being a blogger friend to many, including myself, and inspiring others to be the best person they can be whatever that is. You are the real deal.

Welcome to the group! I think most of us can relate to similar insecurities, the important thing is to do what you love and if that's writing (like me!) keep going and enjoying the ride.
Alex created a wonderful thing with the ISWG didn't he?
As a reader, I have long been awed by writers. I was more than a little shocked to hear that you are human after all, and have an insecurity or six.
Definitely welcome to the ISWG.

Great article.

Insecure? Not me! I just pump out gallons of words and think they are marvelous...now you know that's not true.

I have learned much from ISWG but still am insecure but I have learned I am not alone.

Thanks.
Cool that you're joining in!

And I don't think that many of us have any formal training, so don't worry about that! I never even took a creative writing course in school (I would have if they'd offered it, but...)

Yes, we may not be too sensitive at our sea, but no stabbings please lol the cat and Pat have no formal training at all. We just go to it at our hall
Hi Teresa - well done ... and I think that's why writers ask for beta readers (not the Nazi lot) and we use editors. Writing becomes us - I have no training at all .. and just do my thing - and you do too - I love your stories ... take care and have a good month ... cheers Hilary

Welcome to the IWSG, I am only on my second posting. A lot of your points I pretty much mentioned in my first IWSG posting. Am I a writer? I don't have anything published. Most of my friends and family wink and nod when I tell them I'm a writer. So infuriating at times.

But as I was told, I will tell you. You write, therefore you are a writer.
Don't worry about being published, that will come in time. Some great writers never got published to late in their life. Not that I want to wait that long. Keep at it. Never give up, never surrender. (I think I've heard that somewhere before).

Welcome to the group, Teresa! I feel a lot like 'Tommy Turtle' too sometimes. I think you'll find that hanging around writing communities does wonders in terms of the justification of our craft, (as if we need it - ha!). Glad to have you around, fellow writer :-)

Yay! Welcome. I was always hesitant to say I was a writer until I had a published novel out there, but the truth is, you write a blog. That in and of itself qualifies you to claim the status--even if grammar isn't your friend. That's why we have computer programs, beta readers and editors. Seriously. Not even grammar Nazis are perfect. ;)
Welcome to the group! We are a sensitive bunch, aren't we? Maybe not all of us, but it's certainly my case. But I can say this, I don't believe any of us had any kind of training when we started writing. It wasn't until I started writing that my English grades improves. Funny how that works. :)

IWSG is a wonderful thing for writers. I would venture to say it also helps us non-writers that are just bloggers and get a bit insecure about our work from time to time. Congrats on your first ever IWSG post.

I'm surprised that you haven't posted for IWSG before, but you did a stellar job. You captured the spirit of writing insecurity well. I almost felt like I was at an AA meeting--not that I have any experience with AA, but it's like the ones I've seen in the movies.

I just wanted to let you know you are in good company. I've also never had any real training outside of public school and I also edit my writing to death… I guess that's why we are both in IWSG! Look forward to reading more of your posts! :)

Welcome. I was hesitant to join but I'm so glad I did. Oh the grammar Nazis--they hunt me down.
Welcome to the IWSG! What took you so long? That's right, commitment.
Crap, I'm neither a fast writer or a fast reader. You're ahead of me.
And no formal training. Check! We're in the same boat.
Welcome! Love your humor, which you've mixed nicely with the insecurity. I picked up on your comments about not being a fast writer and constantly editing. NaNoWriMo helped me with both of those. I give a talk entitled "Writing the First Draft." I advocate writing the full story, letting it flow out of your head where it is already a full novel, and onto the page WITHOUT (yes, WITHOUT) editing any of it on the first draft. Works for me!

Hey, you write very well. No need for any apologies whatsoever!

Ditto what you said though. I started writing six years ago with absolutely no idea how to do it correctly...grammar, punctuation, etc. Keep reading stuff like Stephen King's On Writing, Writing Tools by roy Peter Clark, and Grammar Girl. All excellent references for us writers. :)

I'm a Tommy Turtle when it comes to writing, too. But I can also be a Fickle Fanny. New ideas always arise and then I'm off working on that...things don't get done when I do that. Just can't help myself sometimes.

We have something in common, I failed grammar. Who knew back then that I'd become a writer. I'm pretty good, but don't speak grammar to me cause I'll never understand you.

Good luck

Hi Teresa! Somehow I thought you were a member of the IWSG! Yay for joining! I'm a very slow writer, but I just keep plugging along! And you are a wonderful writer!

Welcome! Remember: Fast =/= Good in a lot of situations. Write at the speed you write and you'll be great. Rome wasn't built in a day.

lol - this sounds so much like me - especially 2 points - you were too insecure to join an insecure writer's group (exactly me)
and 2 - while English is your first language - grammar and punctuation aren't - yup - me again.

Welcome!!! You did about a year's worth of IWSG posts right there. Don't you feel better getting all that insecurity out there? Great job.

What a cool support to have. I hope it helps you silence those voices that lie and tell you you can't do the thing that's like breathing.

IWSG is a great group to belong to as a writer. Also, nothing wrong with being a slow writer. Just keep plugging along until the story is done. :-)
