Sunday Reflection: Inside Out

Marvin Williams wrote, “We can practice Jesus' inside-out ethic by giving Him access to the squalor of our hearts and letting Him remove what’s causing the stench.” (September 2022 ODB)

Generally, the world’s agenda muddles our minds, compromises our bodies and souls. The wrong content fills us with negative thoughts, anxiety, chaos, etc. God has nothing to do with chaos. He is full of love and order. He promotes peace. “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus guard our hearts and minds.” (Philippians 4:7

 

The Bible says we (Christ followers) are in the world but should not be of the world. (“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."Romans 12:2)

 

Focusing on God's plan for his children means trading chaos for internal peace and finding our eternal home with him. “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you." (Philippians 4:8-9)

Trading that chaos for God's peace is one of the biggest challenges I think we face. The world seems to be plunging into chaos, but what a comfort to know we can have peace in Christ if we choose.
The term "squalor of our hearts" is a great one! Thanks for this reminder that we can exchange it for peace.
