Question

I ask you.

Why is a sitcom only 30 minutes instead of 60 minutes? Is laughing an hour over a half an hour hazardous to one’s health? Is it wrong to want that much laughter?

Laughter is a good thing.

“From the moment I picked your book up until I laid it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend reading it.” Groucho Marx

“A day without laughter is a day wasted.”
Charlie Chaplin

“Just about the time I get my lungs cleared of life’s grime, from the laughter, the sitcom ends and the laughter goes away. That's not funny.”  Me (surprised?)

Reading this makes me laugh! I have never understood why all sitcoms are just 30 minutes either yet laughter is food to the soul... great post, I am a new follower of your blog. :)

I do love to laugh and make people laugh...that is when I feel the best.

I rarely find a funny sitcome anymore, reality tv and crime shows seem to be the trend.

That's okay, I have no time for tv. I will have to make my own laughter.
Hi Teresa .. probably peoples' attention span, loo break, need for a cup of tea, family questions .. et al .. advert breaks ..

Some I can happily tune in to - others I'd rather not see!

Cheers Hilary

This is why I love movie spoofs so much. Ninety minutes of hilarity! Mel Brooks always makes me laugh.

I LOVE that pattycake video. Those cats and the voices crack me up. The boys and I discovered it last year and have watched it many time. I also laughed at the Groucho quote. Thanks for the chuckle.

It was a famous writer - can't recall who at the moment - who once shut himself away and laughed and laughed to heal his body of some physical ailment, that was probably stress related! I think about him when I'm feeling tense. I don't laugh enough. No, a half hour of laughter ISN'T enough.

Thanks for a post that made me laugh.

Maybe 30 minutes of sit~com maxes out our attention span. Who knows....

What I do know is that laughter is good medicine. Ya might as well laugh about it, huh?

God bless ya and have a grand day sweetie!!! :o)
That's a good question! I don't know why they are only thirty minutes.

That is a good question. Maybe you just have to watch two great comedies back to back.

Maybe an economic reason. That's totally a guess.

Loved the video!

Laughter is so healing! I watch my kids dissolve into giggles over the silliest things, and I sometimes wonder why it comes less easily to us as we grow older.

Great post!

For that matter, whatever happened to half-hour dramas? You're right, there's no reason that comedies can't be an hour long. I suspect that most writers of sitcoms can't keep the funny going for more than thirty minutes, and that writers of dramas can't tell their stories in under an hour.

Fun blog, by the way. I'll be back. (I know, "Don't threaten me, buster!")

Who can fathom why network execs do what they do? But the last laugh is on them in my household. We wait until the series comes out on Netflix and watch the whole thing in one sitting if we want too!
