IWSG November, 2021: Book Title or Blurb?

What’s harder to do, coming up with your book title or writing the blurb?

This post was written for the Insecure Writer's Support Group monthly blogging event created by author Alex J Cavanaugh. Alex's awesome co-hosts this month are Kim Lajevardi, Victoria Marie Lees, Joylene Nowell Butler, Erika Beebe, and Lee Lowery! Be sure to visit each cohost and Alex.

Now to the optional question: What’s harder to do, coming up with your book title or writing the blurb?

Currently, my life is a bit crazy, so this will be brief. I’m unofficially writing with the NaNoWriMo again. I’m also checking in with my daughter’s house and cat daily (nearly 40 miles away) because painters are painting all but one room of her house. Most important, we are grieving the passing of my brother. We're still in shock.

Titles or Blurbs?

Titles are a feel good for me, but blurbs need to get it right. I’ve never passed up a book (as a reader) because of a title or cover, however, if the blurb doesn’t grab me, then I’m out.

Lately, I’ve been studying story blurbs on books both read and unread by me. It’s a good exercise to see what speaks to the storyline and me.

Which is hardest for me? I think writing the blurb is the most difficult.

Here’s a great article on writing a blurb and with examples at Reedsy: How to Write a Book Blurb: A Guide for Novelists

Have a great day and tell your family and friends that you love them.

So sorry for the loss of your brother. My heart goes out to you. Thanks for the link on book titles. I bookmarked it because I struggle with them. Good luck with NaNo!
There are no adequate words when a loved family member dies . My heart goes out to you, for I have been there, and it is a dark season. As for blurb versus title: I struggle with them, too. Still, if you can't catch the eye with your title, the blurb really doesn't matter, right?
My deepest condolences. I lost my sister last year and it still chokes me up. Life is hard and also wonderful. Best to you.

Blurbs are such a challenge to get right! I'm still working on that skill!

Hi Teresa - oh dear ... I so feel for you - on your losing your brother - while driving so far nearly every day to check out your daughter's home ... take care ... NaNo will wait if necessary. All the best - Hilary
